Make-Up Air Heater Units

Definition: make-up air is outside air brought into a building to replace (make up for) inside air that is being exhausted out of the building.

The primary reason for using a Make-Up Air System is to prevent negative pressure from building up inside the building. When stale, fume-laden air from in-plant processes is exhausted to the outside, the air pressure inside the building becomes negative with regard to the air pressure outside; in effect, a partial vacuum is created. Without a proper make-up air system, natural forces attempt to balance inside and outside air pressure by pulling in replacement air from doors, windows, and gaps in building construction. This leads to uncomfortable drafts near air entry points, stagnant air pockets where carbon monoxide and hazardous fumes can collect in unhealthy concentrations, and reduced efficiency in combustion and air exhaustion processes.

The mechanical unit that brings make-up air into the building may also condition the air in some way — filtering, de-humidifing, tempering. The most common example of conditioning make-up air is heating it. This is done (during the heating season, of course) to bring the replacement air up to interior temperature, thus lightening the load on the building's central heating plant and preventing cold drafts. Filtering, another common conditioning chore for Make-Up Air Units (MAUs), helps reduce pollution and contaminants being brought in from outside.

W. C. Grant Make-Up Air Heater Units are available in both vertically and horizontally mounted models.

These units have been painted to match the exterior color of the building. Among other applications, these units typically supply heated replacement air for paint booth lines and general plant exhaust.

Horizontal units are usually installed externally on the building roof, although they can also be mounted internally, suspended from the ceiling with the air intake protruding outdoors through an exterior wall. Like vertically mounted units, these MAUs provide tempered replacement air to balance general plant exhaust
